GPBookBlog: Authors Worth A Look

Published by gaylejp at 1:46 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I have read so many books over the last 30+ years that it is hard to decide which ones deserve a spot on my Favorite Authors list. These 3 have certainly earned a spot:  May Sarton, Annie Dillard, Sue Hubbell.

May Sarton died in 1995 at the age of 83 but she left us with some wonderful words to comfort and inspire us. Her journal style of writing is full of imagery and thought provoking reflections. Check out her Recovering which is all about her experinces  dealing with the hard stuff of life. Stuff like broken relationships,  cancer and depression. Her book At Seventy is a journal detailing her reflections on turning 70.  She also wrote The Fur Person which is a fictionalized account of her pet cat ,Tom Jones, and his many adventures.

Annie Dillard was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1945. She had a typical American childhood, well, typical for those of us born and raised in the 50’s and 60’s.  She details this childhood in her book titled , appropriately enough ,  An American Childhood. She also wrote Pilgrim at Tinker Creek which is about the time she spent in Susquehanna County  Pennsylvania.  Her narrative non-fiction makes for a very good read.

Sue Hubbell was born in 1935 and was a librarian at Brown University prior to her retirement in 1972 when she moved to the Missouri Ozarks where she lived on and maintained a bee farm. Well, maybe since her crop was honey she was more of a honey farmer but , at any rate, her book A Country Year is a honey of a read. It details her adventures and misadventures during the time she lived on her small farm. She also wrote A Book of Bees which is all about keeping bees, harvesting honey, bee culture and the like. Another book is Broadsides From the Other Orders: A Book of Bugswhich is surprisingly interesting even if you aren’t  particularly fond of bugs. In fact, Sue Hubbell may change your mind all together on the subject of bugs.

Thanks for stopping by and next time I will tell you about a few books I have read in the last year.
